Lessons Learned

At KKR, Alisa Wood ’08 (EMBA) looks to what she learned at Columbia.

At KKR, a global investment firm founded by Henry Kravis ’69, Alisa Wood ’08 (EMBA) often relies on advice she gathered at Columbia. “It’s not some crazy corporate finance class that sticks out the most,” she says. “It’s those life lessons out of moments of stress or conflict that you rely on. Those become the fabric of your own corporate person.”

Influential Book: Too Big to Fail by Andrew Ross Sorkin
One such lesson, taught by Laura Resnikoff, was on the value of building a “kitchen cabinet” — a group of close confidants to bounce ideas off. Today, as she heads up the private markets product area for KKR’s capital raising effort and sits on the Advisory Board of the School’s Private Equity Program, honest feedback from colleagues in her “cabinet” is invaluable. “It’s part of my everyday,” she says.
