The latest results for Modell's Sporting Goods looked promising: average sales numbers were up, conversion had improved, and despite a tough stretch, the Philadelphia stores showed steady growth. But the fledgling Washington D.C. division was underperforming, and the recently acquired Herman's stores suffered from nagging problems. Through a data envelopment analysis (DEA) study, this case teaches students how to determine why certain stores are less successful, and ways to improve the performance of these stores.
