In 2004, John Thain appointed Amy Butte, a former chief strategist and chief financial office of Credit Suisse First Boston's asset gathering division, as CFO of the New York Stock Exchange. At the time, the NYSE was facing fundamental operating challenges driven in part by technological change and globalization. Butte hoped to draw on her background in financial technology, market structure, and financial analysis to modernize the exchange's financial planning and operations. In this case, students study Butte's phased approach and analyze her success in transforming the exchange.
