Pre-requisite: Organizational Change (B8507)
This blockweek course will examine a variety of change management topics that both deepen and widen the Org Change course. It is designed for students who want to learn more about a variety of “how to’s”—e.g. how to make cultural (organizational) and personal change stick, how to manage a merger integration process, how to address cross cultural (national) differences in change management, how to go about firing individuals (tactics) and managing the communication process, how to be an effective change leader or consultant in a variety of” live” real world cases brought by outside guests, and how to communicate change messages most effectively.
The course will include a number of class guests from different industries (e.g. banking, publishing, consulting) who have experienced the ups and the downs of driving change. Some will be business leaders who have made major changes, some are innovators who have attempted to introduce paradigm shifts, some are involved with programmatic change initiatives, while others have experience with more decentralized efforts. There are also plans to have a half day field trip to local not for profits going through change (e.g. United Nations, Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York Public Library) to learn about change in our “backyard” at CBS.
Current plans also include a computer simulation that is focused on merger change, an in depth examination of the Lehman-Barclays merger, as well as a self-assessment of Cultural values with accompanying caselets of real world examples of cross cultural conflicts and dilemmas to solve.
Overall, it will be a very interactive course and is intended for students who want more applications, techniques, and up front and personal exposure to change leaders and change situations.
