The Eugene Lang Entrepreneurship Center at Columbia Business School has long been an active advocate for female entrepreneurs. One of the forums supported specifically for women entrepreneurs is the Women Entrepreneurs Network (WEN), a growing membership that brings alumnae and other women entrepreneurs together for learning, advice, and discussion.
The network has over 200 members with concepts at all levels of development. Formal programs featuring expert speakers on legal issues for entrepreneurs, media strategy, and guerrilla marketing are other topics are scheduled throughout the year. Networking and opportunities to pitch a plan to other members are also offered.
The group was initially formed in 2002 by a small group of Columbia Business School Alumnae as a way to support one another and their budding businesses. Andrea Miller ’02, Mindy Cohen ’02, Wanja Michuki ’02 and Jacqueline Chew ’02 met occasionally to discuss ideas, obstacles and options for their budding new businesses developing a solid support network that proved to be very helpful. The idea caught on, and eventually more women asked to join the group.
Monthly meetings vary from morning, luncheons, or evening times and are typically on the last Monday of the month. WEN also incorporates networking events throughout the year. Many of these meetings are videotaped.
