The School’s Eugene Lang Entrepreneurship Center launched Innovation and Entrepreneurship at Columbia this year, a University-wide initiative to nurture and leverage ideas and technologies within Columbia University that have the potential to generate positive returns through new products or services, processes, and licensing revenues.
The Spring semester program is being offered at no cost to Columbia University faculty, staff, and students and will be taught by faculty members from the Business, Law, and Engineering Schools. Topics covered will include the entrepreneurial process, financial forecasting, product design, intellectual property, entrepreneurial finance, and operations, among others. Over the course of 12 sessions, participating teams will develop a fundable business proposal, culminating in a pitch to angel investors and venture capitalists.
A total of 102 applications were submitted from across the Columbia University campus by the November deadline. “Capitalizing on the intellectual capacity, creativity, business acumen, and the spirit of innovation at Columbia University, the goal of the IEColumbia program is to provide a comprehensive platform for those interested in developing their business ideas into successful ventures,” said Clifford Schorer, Entrepreneur-in-Residence of the Lang Center. "We are very pleased with the high response and the entrepreneurial camaraderie the program has generated on campus," he added.
An admissions committee selected 26 finalists to present to members of the selection committee on the evening of December 3, 2012. From this group, 13 teams were identified representing Columbia University students, faculty and researchers from Columbia Business School, Columbia College, Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science, and the Engineering Department of Computer Science.
