The Fall Semester in Review

The Fall Semester in Review

The first half of the academic year brought a jam-packed calendar of exciting new initiatives and continued successful programming for the Lang Center. Below are our highlights:

The Annual Fall Venture Fair was held at Google’s New York Headquarters this year.  Over 200 student entrepreneurs and members of the Center’s advisory community for a high-energy evening of pitching, collaboration and networking.

Innovation and Entrepreneurship at Columbia (IEColumbia),under the leadership of Professors Murray Low and Clifford Schorer, is a new cross-University program that nurtures and leverages ideas and technologies within Columbia University that have the potential to generate returns in the form of new products or services, processes, licensing revenues, and strategic alliances. The free program is open to faculty members, staff members, and students from across the University.

This new university-wide program attracted 102 applications coming from primarily students and faculty members from Columbia Business School and the Engineering School. Other submission entries came from the Journalism School, SIPA, the medical center and Columbia College. The selection was narrowed down from 26 to 13 teams who will comprise the inaugural IEColumbia class this spring semester.

The Lang Center offers two mentoring and advising programs for entrepreneurs. The Columbia Mentorship Program for Entrepreneurs (CMPE) pairs Columbia Business School student entrepreneurs committed to meeting specific goals/objectives that aid in developing their business concept with a seasoned professional from our network. With a pool of over 40 mentors to choose from, 27 students submitted applications and were matched.

The Entrepreneurial Sounding Board provides opportunities for Columbia MBA students and alumni to meet confidentially with faculty members and practitioners to discuss their entrepreneurial ideas. This fall semester 10 practitioners donated over 39 hours to the program.

The Columbia Community Business Program (CCBP) is designed to support the growth and development of for-profit businesses in Upper Manhattan. The Program offers participants access to Columbia University’s resources for technical assistance, entrepreneurial education, and a professionally facilitated peer learning. Now in its third cohort, 23 local entrepreneurs were admitted to the 2012-2014 program. The companies represent a range of industries including construction, food services, retail, fitness, technology and media.

The Columbia Business Lab (CBL) is a new initiative that provides co-working space and various other resources for recent alumni that are dedicated to launching successful new ventures. The facility is provided by WorkSpace at Edison Properties and is funded by Columbia Business School.

In its pilot year, the office space accommodates 21 ventures that will graduate from the program by Summer 2013.  Following successful completion of the pilot program, each year new classes of CBS’ graduating entrepreneurs will be competitively selected to become part of the Columbia Business Lab.
