Student Profile: Rachel McLaughlin '14 and Olivia Cranin '14

Rachel McLaughlin '14 and Olivia Cranin '14 created Prettier Please as part of the Launching New Ventures class at Columbia Business School. They wanted to fix a problem that they both faced, and that problem became glaringly clear in the past year when they attended a whirlwind of wedding events. Between running out to the salon or blow dry bar, finding a decent place to get their makeup done, and then getting home, dressed and out the door, they would inevitably end up late, stressed out, and full of frizz. They knew that getting pretty should be a stress-free, affordable and fun process. Enter Prettier Please.

What is unique about your company?
We bring the salon experience right to your NYC living room. Our professional stylists come to you, with a drink in hand, and take you from pretty to prettier without breaking the bank. Blowouts are just $50. We do group bookings, too.

How did you come up with idea?
After attending more than 24 weddings between the two of us last year, on top of numerous social and professional events, we realized we were spending too much time and money on “getting ready.” We wanted to make getting ready more convenient, affordable, and fun.

Which resources at Columbia / New York City have been most helpful to you?
In NYC, the vast community of talented freelance stylists has been a tremendous asset. At Columbia, Executives in Residence, Columbia Business School faculty, Entrepreneurship at Columbia, and the Athena Center at Barnard College.

How can the community help you now?
Help us by telling your friends and colleagues about us. If you, or someone you know, have events coming up or just love getting your hair and makeup done, we are a perfect fit. Also, we’re always looking for strategic partners who can help us expand our customer base, so contact us if you’re interested. Visit us at www.prettierplease.com.

How can people contact you?
Follow us on Twitter and Instagram @prettierplease or send us a note at heypretty@prettierplease.com.
