Lync 2011 for Mac / Lync for Office 2010

Please note that the School's versions of Office 2013 and above (except on the Mac OS) are already bundled with Skype for Business, which is the upgraded version of Lync. Therefore, you will not need to use Lync if you have one of those versions.

Columbia Business School's implementation of Microsoft® Lync® is an enterprise-ready unified communications platform, intended as a community-building tool. Lync is built to fully integrate with Microsoft Office and is tied to your GSB Exchange email account. This tool can help you see your contacts’ availability; send an IM; start or join an audio, video, or web conference; or make a phone call—all through a consistent, familiar interface that will help ease communication with your classmates.

Things to Know

Especially important for people using a corporate machine

  • Please only use this Lync installation if you are using Office 2010 and cannot upgrade to Office 2013
  • If you already have Lync in your computer, our installation package will remove it, and our version will be installed
  • Before installing Lync, you will need to download all pending Windows and Mac OS updates (including MS Office updates).
  • You need to have administrative rights on your laptop, and at least 500 MB of free hard drive space

Lync 2011 for Mac Installation / How to Log In:

To install Lync, simply download the installation file from the link below. Once downloaded, close all open programs (especially Microsoft Office programs such as Word, Outlook, and Communicator/Lync/Skype) and run the downloaded file.  After completing the installation wizard, it is recommended that you reboot your computer.

  1. Once you reboot, in the Lync sign-in window, type your entire GSB lifetime email address in the email and username fields:
    Email – FLastname##@gsb.columbia.edu (e.g., JSmith99@gsb.columbia.edu)
    Username – FLastname##@gsb.columbia.edu
    Password – your password for GSB Exchange email
  2. Click Advanced.
  3. Under Authentication, clear the Use Kerberos check box.
  4. Under Connection Settings, click Manual configuration.
  5. In both the Internal Server Name box and the External Server Name box, type sipdir.online.lync.com:443.
  6. Click OK.
  7. Click Sign In.

Windows Installation / How to Log In:

When finished with the process, log in to Lync by typing your entire lifetime email address in the email and username fields:

Password – your password for GSB Exchange email
