Welcoming the EMBA-Americas and January Full-Time Classes
Amanda Carlson, Assistant Dean of Admissions

Greetings from Armstrong Hall!

With the flu outbreak and arctic air sweeping through the Northeast, I am hopeful that our Admissions team will stay healthy (and on top of our application reading!) over the coming weeks. The addition of a hot chocolate machine to our office has really warmed our hearts and brought good cheer to our Admissions Committee meetings.

We have so much to be grateful for at the start of 2013, including the two most recent intakes of incoming students: those in our inaugural EMBA-Americas program and those in our sixteen month January Full-Time intake.  These classes are inspiring, talented, and bring fresh energy and enthusiasm to our student body. The new students have eclectic and dynamic backgrounds including: a forensic technology expert; a secret service agent; a former Kung Fu world champion; eight medical doctors; and someone who will run a family casino business. Imagine reading their applications!

For those of you who have not heard about the “CBS Matters” initiative at Columbia, I would encourage you to learn more. CBS Matters is an opportunity for students and other members of the CBS community to present to their peers and classmates what matters most to them and why. I recently shared my own CBS Matters with Cluster Y ’14 last Friday. I spoke about the values my parents instilled in me, my treasured and beloved niece and nephew, and, yes, about my Columbia family. Of course, during the Q&A, Cluster Y was eager to learn about my favorite application essays, to share feedback about how they decided to attend business school in general, and to express their joy upon receiving acceptance to Columbia.

I share this with you for a reason. As I was putting together my own CBS Matters presentation, I realized that our job in Admissions can be likened to reading a written CBS Matters every day; in fact, many times a day. How fortunate we are to learn more about you. How humbled we are by the stories you share and the trust you put in us. So thank you. Our entire admissions team looks forward to reviewing your applications and wishes you a happy and healthy 2013.
