Professor Sudhakar (Sid) Balachandran has been appointed the first Assistant Dean for Teaching Excellence at Columbia Business School. Among his duties, he will lead the Samberg Institute for Teaching Excellence.
“Creating this role and putting a faculty member at the helm of Samberg is a very important enhancement to the institute, and Sid is the best person for the role,” said Glenn Hubbard, Dean and Russell L. Carson Professor of Finance and Economics. “He has had tremendous success teaching in the MBA, EMBA, and Executive Education programs and brings to the classroom his significant practical experience. His goal in this new position is to make the already excellent teaching at the School even better by focusing not only on course content, but also on the most effective ways for faculty members to deliver that content to students.”
Balachandran will work to integrate content across disciplines, contributing to a curriculum that will increasingly prepare students to “connect the dots” across industries and functions. Additionally, he will collaborate with faculty members to develop course materials that further unite scholarship with its real-world applications in both core and elective classes. Balachandran will also focus on strengthening the pre-MBA program to better prepare students for the School’s academic experience, lead the School’s mentoring program for new faculty members, and help professors more easily share best practices and proven pedagogical methods.
Balachandran joined the School in 2000 and has more than 10 years of business experience as a management consultant for Ernst & Young and a manager at Baxter Healthcare Corporation. In 2006 he received the Dean’s Award for Teaching Excellence in the Core. His research has focused on how firms use performance measures to align the interests of managers and shareholders and create shareholder value.
“As Dean Hubbard often says, building on our continued success in the classroom is key to our success as a business school,” Balachandran said. “I am excited and honored to be appointed to this position.”
