Columbia Business School Hosts 5th Annual Workshop on Negotiating Real Estate Joint Ventures

On Friday, November 18th, graduate students from the Real Estate programs at Columbia, MIT, and NYU gathered in Uris Hall for the 5th annual Coming to Terms: Negotiating Real Estate Joint Ventures workshop. The event which is co-sponsored by the Paul Milstein Center for Real Estate, the MIT Center for Real Estate, the Columbia Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation, and Grosvenor, provided students from each of the different programs the opportunity to spend a full day discussing key issues in a real estate joint-venture (JV) agreement and to engage with seasoned professionals from both the legal and business sides of the real estate industry.

Real Estate Students Take Third Place in the 2016 Annual National Real Estate Challenge

On November 17th, the University of Texas at Austin – McCombs School of Business hosted the 14th Annual National Real Estate Challenge sponsored by Invesco. Twenty of the top MBA programs participated in the competition. Columbia Business School, represented by Mark Abramowicz ’18, Samuel Fenwick ’18, Anthony Feenick ’17, Daniel Liu ’17, Nicholas Mellis ’17, and Joe Noon ’17, placed 3rd in the competition behind the host university and Northwestern’s Kellogg School of Management.

Faculty Interview Series: Brian Lancaster

Brian Lancaster is an Adjunct Professor of Finance at Columbia Business School. He also teaches MBA courses at the NYU Stern School of Business. He is President of The Minot Group, a real estate finance, investing and consulting firm. Previously, Professor Lancaster was Managing Director and Co-Head of Structured Transactions Analytics, Risk, and Strategy at the Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS). Prior to joining RBS, Professor Lancaster was the Chief Investment Officer of the Real Estate Division of Wells Fargo/Wachovia and Head of Structured Products Research. He was also a Managing Director Principal at Bear Stearns. In a recent interview with Brian Hwang ’17, he discusses the current real estate debt market, his own professional experience, and his recommendations for aspiring real estate professionals.
