HERMES was saddened to hear that after a short illness Brian Martin Sweeney ’63 died on May 12, 2008, at his home in Santa Cruz, Calif. Brian was born in New York City. Upon graduating from the School, he pursued a career in marketing and finance. In 1975, Brian launched Sweeney & Company, which focused on consulting in business marketing, financial services and other development services. He worked with Fortune 500, venture and middle-market companies. Before that, Brian was in general management at Colgate-Palmolive in the United States and abroad and at Citibank and Downe Communications in the United States. He was also a senior engagement manager at McKinsey in New York. Throughout his life, Brian was active in the Catholic Church and a passionate advocate of social reform. Recently, he was energetically focused on reforming public schools in disadvantaged neighborhoods of New Orleans with the group All Congregations Together in New Orleans (ACTNOLA). Brian also led the organization and implementation of many public forums, as well as the development of the “People’s Platform,” a mandate for public school reform, which was endorsed by the mayor, the city council and the school board. Brian embraced life with zest and vigor. He was an art lover, jogger and inquisitive theologian and philosopher, as well as an enthusiastic world traveler. He loved his family and friends passionately. Brian is survived by his beloved wife of 10 years, Donna Marie Murphy; his three children from a prior marriage, Sarah Sweeney (Eric Forsthoefel), Phillip Sweeney (Ledice) and Clare Sweeney (Andre Robertson); Donna’s children, Patrick Murphy and Michael Murphy (Amber), and eight grandchildren. The funeral service was held on May 15 at the Resurrection Catholic Community Church in Aptos, Calif., followed by a burial in Oklahoma.
