This case summarizes the history of autonomous vehicle development and the technology that supports these machines. The background information on vehicles is then applied to robotic vacuum cleaners and the analytics behind the sensors that guide them. In the accompanying assignment, students are asked to investigate whether a predictive analytic model could estimate—at any given point—how much closer to the base the robot is getting. The exercise is intended to illustrate the challenges and benefits of such models as they relate to more sophisticated machinery such as autonomous driving vehicles.
