Biography
As director of the Advanced Management Program, Bruce partners with the faculty director and the on-site and off-site Columbia teams, working with visiting faculty and conference center staff to deliver a transformational educational opportunity for the global classes of senior executive participants. At the Advanced Management Program, Bruce teaches sessions on leadership, focusing on communication, defining purpose, flexible learning, effective messaging, and the power of writing as a tool to face future challenges. In addition to his teaching and leadership roles, he has responsibility for the pre- and post-program effort of the executive education team, including serving as an executive coach. In the summer of 2012, he launched a Columbia MBA elective course entitled Leadership through Fiction. The class uses novels, theater plays and feature films as the source material to study issues of leadership. The popular course has run from 2012 through 2016 and will also be offered as an Executive MBA course in 2017. Over the years he has taught and had a leadership role in a number of open enrollment programs in the Executive Education portfolio. In 2013, 2014, and 2016, he designed, directed, and taught in the leadership development program for the French luxury goods company KERING. He has also been a visiting professor at the WHU Business School in Germany in 2013-2014 and Faculty Director in 2016 of the one-week leadership program of WHU at the Columbia Business School. In 2014, he taught a three-day program in Armenia to participants from the Central Bank of Armenia, and gave speaking engagements at the American University of Armenia, while appearing on a popular Armenia television news show to discuss his work with executive leaders and graduate business students. In 2015, he taught a leadership session at the Society of Gynecologic Oncology’s Annual Meeting on Woman’s Cancer in Chicago. Concurrent with his work in executive education, his writing credits include a published novel, a produced screenplay and a business case on the credit function of a building supply company for Columbia Case-Works. Bruce received a BA in Politics and Literature from the University of California at Santa Cruz and a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing from Columbia University. He lives with his wife and two sons in the Coachella Valley in California.
