Biography
Matthias Breuer joined Columbia University in 2018. His research interests revolve around the determinants and economic consequences of firms’ financial reporting. His research, for example, examines how reporting and auditing regulations affect firms’ bank relationships and industry-level competition. In his research, Professor Breuer uses varied methods including empirical archival methods, structural modelling and estimation, and field experiments. His research has been presented at leading conferences, published in the Journal of Accounting Research and the Review of Financial Studies, and received the Best Paper Awards of the Annual Accounting Conference 2018 (Berlin) and the American Accounting Association's FARS Midyear Meeting 2019 (Seattle).
At Columbia, Professor Breuer teaches the core financial accounting class in the MBA program and a course on empirical methods in accounting research in the PhD program. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from WHU―Otto Beisheim School of Management (Germany), a Master of Science in Accounting and Finance from the London School of Economics (United Kingdom), and a Ph.D. in Business from the University of Chicago.
