Message from the Director

Columbia Business School’s China Business Initiative (CBI) was launched with a sole purpose to improve understanding of the management practices of Chinese firms.

China began to implement a policy of reform and opening-up about 30 years ago. This ignited an entrepreneurial fervor, and countless numbers of businesses emerged like bamboo shoots after a spring rain. With creative ideas and a determination to get rich fast, they set up shops and persevered. Many of these businesses have flourished and some of them have even gone on to earn international acclaim. But countless others have failed. There is much to be learned from their stories.

CBI strives to build a community of researchers, practitioners and policymakers united by a common interest to understand the foundations of corporate successes and the conditions for business failures in China. Our community will consist of thought leaders from both China and the western world. Through forums, roundtables and research publications, we will advance our knowledge about the management challenges facing Chinese firms and their management innovations. As a result, we will all be better equipped to address the new challenges facing the world in the 21st century.
