One of the most elusive challenges facing corporate executives is the ability to sustain profitable growth in established enterprises. This course explores the entrepreneurial approaches utilized by successful growth companies. Through readings, cases, class discussion and guest lectures, we will examine how firms across a variety of product and services industries tap new markets and outperform competition by maintaining an entrepreneurial edge.
This course is intended to be practical, hands-on, and applied, covering topics such as:
• Barriers to entrepreneurship in large enterprises
• Alternative growth strategies
• Organizational constructs to foster innovation
• Tools and techniques to manage new ventures
• The critical role of effective leadership
Students will be given the understanding and tools to learn how to identify, nurture and successfully scale new businesses within large enterprises drawing on cases from firms in a variety of industries, including IBM, ING, HP, Dow Chemical, RR Donnelley and Timberland.
Grades will be based on class participation and short written assignments. There are no exams.

Len Sherman brings over thirty years of business experience and academic research on
growth strategy, innovation and entrepreneurship to Columbia Business School. At CBS,
Professor Sherman teaches “Integrated Marketing Strategy” and "Entrepreneurship in
Large Enterprises to MBA and EMBA students, earning the Dean’s Award for Teaching
Excellence in 2013.
