Each winter, the Columbia Business School Private Equity Program offers an intensive long-weekend during which professionals, students, and alumni will be immersed in the world of private equity.
Over the course of four days, Deal Camp participants will partake in inter-active presentations, instruction and case studies from Columbia faculty and a variety of industry professionals in an intimate and high-intensity learning environment away from the distractions of everyday school and work life. Each evening culminates in a sit-down dinner where speakers and attendees have the opportunity to relax, reflect upon and discuss the day’s events.
The program kicks off with a boutique session for executives on the first day and is followed and continues over the next two days with an intensive, continuous schedule of industry speakers.
The driving force behind the creation of Deal Camp was to equip Columbia Business School MBA and Executive MBA students seeking a career in private equity and related fields with the foundational knowledge that would better prepare them to enter the field.
Based on the popularity and success of the program, it has been redesigned to address the needs of young and established professionals starting their first private equity jobs or considering a career transition into the private equity industry.

By attending Deal Camp, participants will expand their knowledge on the skills and tools to make deal decisions from beginning to end. Topics may include: legal issues in setting up a fund, due diligence, deal transaction mechanics, financing, tax considerations, PR strategy and exits. This program will also teach participants LBO Model and deal process. Deal Camp will prepare participants with:
- the tools needed to work on the LBO Model
- new ideas for deal sourcing
- the understanding of common legal issues in private equity
- clarity on career paths and the specific roles best suited to the participant
- an opportunity to meet several industry key players in an intimate setting
Staff from Columbia Business School will be in attendance for individual questions and guidance on career decisions.

Deal Camp takes place over four days (Thursday through Sunday) at a top-rated oceanfront conference center in Montauk, New York. The first day focuses on the basics of the industry, designed specifically for professionals. Participants will sharpen their skills on deal-making, LBO modeling, and putting the skills to work in a case study. Topics covered include overview of deal mechanics, basics of the industry.
During days two, three and four, participants are joined by a select group of current MBA students looking to enter the private equity industry. Industry experts and esteemed Columbia Business School finance faculty will lead discussions and case studies that will provide not only an introductory foundation for understanding the industry, but also for developing insight into the challenges facing the industry in the years ahead. Participants will be exposed to all aspects of the private equity life cycle- fundraising, deal sourcing, transaction execution, management of the firm and ultimate exit.

Donna M. Hitscherich, Faculty Director
Senior Lecturer in the Discipline of Business, Finance and Economics
Director, Private Equity Program
Prior to her present position at Columbia Business School, Professor Hitscherich had a career in investment banking, holding positions at CS First Boston, JP Morgan & Co. Incorporated, and Banc of America Securities. While at JP Morgan, she was a founding member of the takeover defense team and a senior member of the advisory review committee which was responsible for the M&A fairness opinions issued. As a managing director in the mergers and acquisitions group of Banc of America Securities, she was secretary of the firm's fairness opinion committee and a major contributor to the firm's training programs for managing directors and associates.
Prior to her investment banking career, Hitscherich was a corporate lawyer at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom.
Since joining Columbia Business School as an adjunct faculty member in 1992, Professor Hitscherich has taught Corporate Finance, Business Law, Mergers and Acquisitions, and Advanced Corporate Finance in both the MBA and Executive MBA programs. Professor Hitscherich has been the recipient of the Executive MBA Commitment to Excellence Award from the Berkeley-Columbia EMBA graduating classes from 2010 to 2013. She was nominated for the Dean's Award for Innovation in the MBA Curriculum for her presentation of the Advanced Corporate Finance course in 2002. She has also served as a lecturer in law and accounting at Columbia Law School. She currently serves as a Senior Lecturer in the Discipline of Business for Finance and Economics and as Director of the Private Equity Program.
In addition, there will be over 30 speakers from industry and academia.
