Industries, organizations, and individuals in the 21st century business world confront a daunting set of challenges. Increasing globalization means doing business in countries with radically different values. At the same time, public awareness and scrutiny of business practices has never been higher. Finally, the combination of technology, globalization, and ever-present media has produced rapid cultural and ethical transformations.
The Ethical Leadership program is helping leaders and their organizations navigate this challenging landscape full of ethical obstacles and landmines to become more capable of identifying, preventing, and resolving any ethical dilemma. The program helps participants understand the range of underlying levers business leaders have at their disposal to successfully implement their value objectives while anticipating the constraints of the organization's market and non-market environments.
Leaders will develop the ability to frame, analyze, and resolve ethical dilemmas in their organization and learn how to design procedures and processes to produce ethical outcomes. They will walk away with new self-insight while adding depth to their perspective and understanding.

During the program, business leaders develop:
- An understanding for how economic, psychological, organizational, and cultural processes influence ethical leadership

Group work and hands-on exercises include:
Ethical Dilemma Game Plan
Participants will be placed into teams to discuss ethical dilemmas — defined as tensions between two or more conflicting values — they have faced or are currently facing in their organization. They will select the most vexing dilemma from their group, then diagnose that dilemma, and ultimately offer potential solutions during a group presentation. This process will allow each person to away with key insights and preparing them for a real-world application of their learnings. Learn more about the exercise in this video:
This I Believe Essays
Effective leaders define their own values, and they communicate their importance to others. To help participants in this process, they will draft a one-page essay that describes their personal credo and its significance. The program is designed for executives of all levels and industries who are seeking to enhance their ethical decision-making and leadership skills. Participants may come from the private, nonprofit, or public sectors. In addition to business leaders, human resource managers and leaders of teams who are responsible for ethical decision making will benefit from the program.

Adam Galinsky’s research and teaching focus on leadership, power, negotiations, decision making, diversity, and ethics. He is the co-author of the critically acclaimed and best-selling book, Friend & Foe, and he has published more than 200 scientific articles, chapters, and teaching cases in the fields of management and social psychology. His Ted talk, How to Speak Up for Yourself, is one of the most popular of all time with has over 5.9 million views.
His research has received numerous national and international awards from the scientific community, including the most prestigious mid-career award in Social Psychology. He has received teaching awards at the Kellogg School of Management and Princeton University. Based on his research and teaching, Poets and Quants selected him as one of the World’s 50 Best B-School Professors in 2012.
Professor Galinsky has consulted with and conducted executive workshops for hundreds of clients across the globe, including Fortune 100 firms, non-profits, and local and national governments.
Along with Professor Galinsky, additional Columbia Business School faculty contribute to and teach in the program.
