Overview: Big Data for Better Business, a Seminar Series to Cultivate the Next Level of Data and Business Decision Acumen
Delivering executive-education style content, and featuring Columbia Business School’s top faculty and select invited practitioners, the Big Data for Better Business (BDBB) Seminar Series by the Program for Financial Studies (PFS) brings timely and innovative content related to data science and analytics for business and finance to the Columbia Business School community.
Exciting advances happening in computer science, linguistics, artificial intelligence and computational hardware are revolutionizing how business is conducted. Through our seminar series, we seek to expose our students to these innovations in a non-technical way. The expectation is students will then be able to apply these technologies in their business careers by communicating effectively with and outsourcing to relevant domain experts. Topics ranging from Python coding, natural language processing (NLP), machine learning, data science and analytics, and more are addressed during targeted, 1.5 to 3-hour evening seminars, with 4-5 seminars per academic year.
The seminars are taught by Columbia Business School’s premier faculty and selected practitioners, who are lead researchers in areas of finance, data science, FinTech and economics. Students from the full-time and executive MBA cohorts are invited to register, as well as the M.S. in economics, accounting and marketing graduate students. On average we have 75-100 students in attendance at each seminar. Student demand for our seminars is growing rapidly as big data and data science for business leadership increases in relevancy for the business student population.
Partnership & Sponsorship
Building on the success of the BDBB series, and in order to strengthen its ties with industry, the Program for Financial Studies at Columbia Business School is seeking to expand seminar topics and include an expanded range of experts. As such, we are actively seeking collaboration and sponsorship for our 2020-2021 seminar series.
Industry partners will have a unique opportunity to shape the curriculum at the intersection of data science and business. Sponsorship offers corporate partners a unique opportunity to engage with Columbia Business School’s MBA and Master of Science students for networking and recruiting. In addition, through affiliation with the Program for Financial Studies, corporate partners will have the opportunity to engage our world-class faculty, students, and alumni business leaders; gain exposure to early stage PFS research, and access to PFS conferences; and help define the Program’s programming directions.
