William N. Goetzmann
Edwin J. Beinecke Professor of Finance and Management Studies and Director of the International Center for Finance, Yale School of Management
Professor Goetzmann is an expert on a diverse range of investments, including stocks, bonds and alternatives. He co-authored an influential strategic analysis of the $800 Billion Norwegian Pension Fund Global for the Norwegian Ministry of Finance, which made the case for factor investing at the institutional level.
Professor Goetzmann serves on investment committees of several organizations including the investment advisory committee of the $60 Billion United Auto Workers Retiree Medical Benefits Trust, a taxable investment trust, various educational institutions and a foundation with a substantial endowment. He served on the board and chaired the audit committee of Commonfund for a number of years.
His research interests include asset management, endowments and investment funds, as well as financial history and the long-term performance of asset markets. He has written several papers about the early history of the Chinese capital markets.
Professor Goetzmann is the Director of the International Center for Finance at the Yale School of Management. The center supports research and learning opportunities centered on the role of finance in society.
Professor Goetzmann has authored or co-authored a number of books, including Modern Portfolio Theory and Investment Analysis, a leading textbook in investment management, The Origins of Value: The Financial Innovations that Created Modern Capital Markets and The Great Mirror of Folly: Finance, Culture and the Crash of 1720. His forthcoming book Money Changes Everything: How Finance Made Civilization Possible is a global history of finance.
Professor Goetzmann holds a Ph.D. from Yale University, a M.B.A. from the Yale School of Management and a B.A. from Yale College.
