“The past two years have been challenging for me. My mother, unfortunately, passed on last year. ”

“During my mother’s last visit to New York, she visited the Morningside campus. She loved the feel of it and said, ‘This would be great for you, Nana. You should apply!’ I applied with her knowledge, and she was very, very excited about me going. She graduated from high school, and that was where she stopped. She always told me, ‘You have to keep going. You have to learn as much as you can. Knowledge is power.’”

“At the beginning of my second semester, she was struck by a drunk driver. After I lost her, I wasn’t sure if I wanted to continue the program. A lot of things went through my mind when I lost my mother: sadness, anger, grief, fatigue, etc. I had to rely on my inner resources to make it through. I also remember thinking to myself, ‘OK, I’m part of my mom’s legacy.’ As gentle and kind as she was, she was also an extremely tough woman. I felt that continuing the program in spite of everything would honor my mother's memory. With the help of my family, friends, and the community here at Columbia — my cluster, people in the BBSA — I’m in my last semester now! I’ve really tested myself in terms of resiliency and cultivated lifelong bonds at CBS along the way. I believe that my mom would be proud of me.”
