“The only way you can understand a person’s true identity is by speaking with them. For example, the world without context sees me solely as a black-presenting female. But, there are so many complexities in this identity. I’m the first American-born citizen in my family — my parents are immigrants. Being raised in a Jamaican household, while operating in systems that had not yet understood the first-generation experience, was challenging during my formative years. As an adult, I am proud of my Caribbean American heritage, empathize with the generational experiences of my African American peers, but at my core am vigilant for society to move towards a place of understanding what it means when someone identifies as "Black in America." What better place than CBS is there to engage in these conversations — where we are being shaped into tomorrow's business leaders, while simultaneously learning more about ourselves and each other.”
