Baking Second Chances into Making Brownies
Greyston Bakery is a local food manufacturer who uses an open-hiring model. This model has helped Greyston stand out to large corporations, such as Ben and Jerry’s, who are interested in supporting social enterprises —as well as offers second-chances to individuals who otherwise have a hard time finding stable employment. Job seekers put their name on a waitlist and once a job is available, they will be employed, no questions asked. This policy has allowed many members of the Yonkers-community where the bakery is located to restart their lives in ways they never thought were possible.
